Open Caption Films

What are Open Caption Films?

Open-captioned movies ensure that all people can enjoy films, including the Deaf and hearing-impaired. The producers of the captions, make every effort to include the captions for all the dialogue in a movie, as well as significant sound effects and song lyrics. Please note that editorial decisions are sometimes made not to include song lyrics as they may detract from the important action or visual impact that is taking place on the screen.

Who uses captions

Anyone - captions are there to be enjoyed by all members of the public.

Deaf people - people who are Deaf rely on captions to follow the soundtrack on movies, television or videos.

Hearing impaired people - people who have some degree of hearing loss use captions to help them understand the soundtrack. There are around 1.7 million hearing impaired people in Australia.

People learning English - many language schools use captioned videos and television to help teach people spoken English. It is easier to follow a soundtrack reading the captions and listening to the pronunciation of words.
